PancakeSwap has evolved far beyond its origins as a simple decentralized exchange on $BNB Chain. It now operates across 11 networks and offers spot trading, perpetual futures, crosschain execution, token launches and access to tokenized real-world assets.
The platform has also retained considerable scale. Weekly active users recently stood at approximately 1.19mn, while the protocol generated $4.19mn in fees and $1.14mn in earnings during the latest reported week.
However, the headline expansion masks a weaker underlying trend. PancakeSwap is attracting more users than it did in previous years, but those users are trading smaller amounts and generating less revenue. The protocol remains fundamentally strong in absolute terms, yet its current growth is not translating into equally strong economic activity.
PancakeSwap is becoming a broader trading platform
PancakeSwap's core product remains its automated market maker, where users trade against liquidity pools rather than a traditional order book. Liquidity providers supply assets to these pools and receive a portion of trading fees in return. Recent developments are pushing PancakeSwap closer to becoming a general onchain brokerage platform. Its Stock Terminal now provides access to more than 500 tokenized stocks, exchange-traded funds, bonds, gold products and pre-IPO exposures. The protocol also rebuilt its perpetual futures platform on 15 May. The previous liquidity pool model was replaced by an order book powered by perpetuals exchange Aster, adding market and limit orders, cross and isolated margin, multiple collateral assets and leverage of up to 200 times on major markets.
PancakeSwap Infinity, the protocol's upgraded trading infrastructure, has also gained meaningful adoption. During its first year, it processed more than $113bn in volume across 250mn transactions and served over 5mn users. These developments broaden PancakeSwap's addressable market, but their economic contribution remains limited. More than 98% of protocol fees still come from its core automated market maker products. Perpetuals, prediction markets and other side products collectively generate less than 2%.
The product catalogue is therefore diversifying faster than the revenue base.
User growth is not translating into economic growth
Year to date, trading volume fell 66% year-on-year to $228.5bn. Fees and earnings both declined 26%, to $262.1mn and $78.1mn respectively. Nevertheless, average weekly active users increased 33% to 1.36mn. This is not a minor slowdown. PancakeSwap is serving more users, but those users are generating far less economic activity. The gap suggests that user growth has shifted toward smaller accounts, lower-value transactions or less frequent trading rather than deeper engagement with the protocol.

The deterioration is even clearer at the individual user level. Across comparable year-to-date periods, average weekly trading volume per user fell from approximately $18.9k in 2025 to $5.6k in 2026, a decline of around 70%. Average weekly fees per user dropped from $11.73 to $6.43, down 45%. The latest readings are weaker still: by 20 Jul, weekly volume per user had fallen to $3.7k, while fees per user stood at just $3.51. PancakeSwap has retained considerable reach, but each active user is now generating materially less trading activity and revenue than during the 2025 boom.
Yet, the comparison is less negative when measured against 2024. Users are up approximately 82%, trading volume is up 92%, fees are up 108% and earnings have increased by more than 330%. This indicates that PancakeSwap is not returning to structural weakness. Instead, activity is normalizing after an unusually strong 2025.

Chain diversification is also improving. $BNB Chain accounted for 93.8% of tracked volume during the first half of 2025, but its share fell to 83.4% one year later. Base increased its share from 3.3% to 13.5%, with volume rising 76% from $16.3bn to $28.7bn. Base is becoming a meaningful second market, although PancakeSwap remains heavily dependent on a chain whose own tokenized asset base is growing faster than its usage.
A strong platform awaiting stronger monetization
PancakeSwap remains one of decentralized finance's most established and profitable trading platforms. It has a large user base, positive earnings and improving chain diversification. But the current fundamentals do not yet support a renewed high-growth narrative. Users and products are expanding faster than trading volume, fees and earnings. The newer businesses add strategic potential, but the protocol's economics remain overwhelmingly tied to spot trading.
PancakeSwap is therefore best understood as a mature platform experiencing post-boom normalization. Its infrastructure is broader than before, but the next stage of the thesis depends on whether that broader distribution can generate meaningful revenue rather than simply more activity.
