Belarusian police: no, we can’t open a criminal case on Bitcoin theft

The police of Belarus will not open a case on the theft of a sum of 0.83 BTC in summer 2017. This has been confirmed by the sources of the local news outlets in the law enforcement.

The crime happened in the city of Brest, and the victim transferred the aforementioned sum to the criminal who simply didn’t pay anything back. The latter used the fact that it takes some time to transfer Bitcoin from one wallet to another. It’s very likely that the victim has mourned the loss repeatedly later during the winter of 2017, when the initial stolen sum equalling to $2500 has transformed into $20,000.

The authorities of the Republic of Belarus have made cryptocurrency and token enterprise legal recently, which is atypical for the most post-Soviet states. The leader of the country Alexander Lukashenko called this a bold but necessary move which might make the country a lead technological hub. However, to attract more crypto investors, among other things, the local law enforcement might want to review its legal practice.
