Sick Nerd,” a full-time Twitch streamer with more than 109,000 followers, received a late Christmas present this week after an anonymous donor gifted him a total of 20 Bitcoin (BTC) while he was playing Old School RuneScape, a fantasy MMORPG that has recently seen a surge in popularity on streaming platforms.

The craziness began when Sick Nerd, a verified Twitch Partner, received a donation of 4 BTC, which of course caused the streamer and most of his viewers to question whether or not the $14K gift was for real.

Then Sick Nerd received another donation, bringing his total to 11 BTC. That’s when he really started to think someone was messing with him.

At the end of the day, the total had jumped to 20 BTC (~$73,000), prompting Sick Nerd to jump on Twitter and send out another thank you to the anonymous benefactor.

Thank you to my mysteriously benefactor whoever you are, genuinely a life changing amount of money that I or nobody deserves but look what happened.
Crazy

The ability to donate cryptocurrency to streamers is made possible through Streamlabs, which recently integrated support for Coinbase. This means viewers can tip streamers in every coin currently available on the popular exchange.

Of course, the Runescape donation is a mere drop in the bucket of what is gifted annually to streamers across Twitch, YouTube and Mixer. In fact, the world’s most popular streamer, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, earned roughly $10 million in 2018, on the back of 12-hour daily streams and numerous sponsorships with top-brands.

That being said, who’s down for some Runescape?
