Ukraine Rug Pulls the Airdrop

An historic crypto airdrop by the Ukrainian government has been cancelled hours after the snapshot was due.

“After careful consideration we decided to cancel airdrop,” Mykhailo Fedorov, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Digital Transformation, said before adding:

“Every day there are more and more people willing to help Ukraine to fight back the agression. Instead, we will announce NFTs to support Ukrainian Armed Forces soon. We DO NOT HAVE any plans to issue any fungible tokens.”

He gave no reason for cancelling the airdrop announced by Ukraine’s official Twitter account, but Tron’s founder Justin Sun complained about the airdrop not including Tron donors.

“It is a wise decision!” – Sun said in reply to the minister’s announcement even though Tron is a centralized copy pasta blockchain with a market cap of just 2% that of ethereum.

The Ukrainian government instead saw donations double in their ethereum address after the airdrop announcement to $20 million as pictured above showing donations before and after the airdrop was announced.

We presume they’re a bit new to crypto however and aren’t familiar with the petty tribalism of some discredited cryptonians, and thus maybe thought the whole thing isn’t worth the trouble.

Which is a bit of a shame because it would have been a new way of doing something which might have energized the whole donation based charity industry and may have increased further support, as well as the budget, for Ukraine’s war efforts.
