On March 2, 2022, The Sandbox Game, an Ethereum-based decentralized NFT gaming metaverse announced on Twitter their partnership with SHIBUYA109 Entertainment Corporation. Additionally, The Sandbox and SHIBUYA109 made this move to create a playground that provides a 'thrilling experience' and provides 'next-generation consumer experience' to their users. During the pandemic, many corporations realized that traveling will be in jeopardy. Thereby, SHIBUYA109 Entertainment wanted to create Shibuya City that could be visited by people from across the globe. The Representative Director of SHIBUYA109 Entertainment, Ayushi Ishikawa stated,
“We were among the first to focus on the metaverse and NFT, and have been preparing for it since April 2021. 2021 is said to be the first year of NFT, and 2010 is the first year of the metaverse, and we have decided to enter The Sandbox, a popular blockchain game. We are very much looking forward to the challenge of a new field that is different from our existing business."
The SHIBUYA109 Land is a source of Japanese culture in the Metaverse and the real world as well. Thus, Ayushi further continues,
