  • On Sunday, CryptoPunk #5822 sold for 8,000 ETH, which was valued at roughly $23.7 million at the time of sale.
  • Deepak Thapliyal, the CEO of Chain, a cloud blockchain infrastructure company, purchased the NFT straight from an online marketplace controlled by Larva Labs, the CryptoPunks developer.

CryptoPunks broke its previous record with the sale of dozens of crypto punks for approximately $24 million worth of ETH.

CryptoPunks are NFT collections on the popular blockchain platform Ethereum. Larva Labs which consists of a team of two, Canadian software developers John Watkinson and Matt Hall, launched the project in 2017.

CryptoPunk #5822 sold for 8,000 ETH worth around $23.7 million at the time of sale, on Sunday. CEO of Chain, cloud blockchain infrastructure firm, Deepak Thapliyal bought the NFT directly from an online marketplace which is owned by Larva Labs, the CryptoPunks developer.

The earlier top sale dates back to June 2021, when Shalom Mackenzie, the largest shareholder of DraftKings, bought CryptoPunk for $11.8 million. In December, a pseudonymous 4156 did the sale of his namesake Punk for $10.26 million worth of ETH through the Larva Labs marketplace, which was the largest on-chain sale on the marketplace.

In a tweet, Thapliyal revealed that he paid for CryptoPunk by using leverage through DeFi protocol Compound Finance. He also showed his gratitude toward Compound founder Robert Leshner. He said he is thankful for Compound Finance that while purchasing this he is also able to hold ETH.

The rarest avatar type i.e. Alien, is what his latest Punk features. Among the entire CryptoPunks collection of 10,000 avatars, only 9 are alien avatars. Back in July 2017, the particular punk was sold for 8 ETH or just over $1,600 at that time of sale.

The sale on Saturday is the fourth-highest sale ever recorded for a single NFT. The sale of “Every day’s: The First 5,000 Days” by Beeple last March holds the title of highest single-NFTsale, finalized at $69.3 million.

“Clock” NFT by artist Pak is listed second at under USD 54 million sold to AssangeDAO this week. The third in the list is a “Human One” by Beeple sold for $29 million in November, which also pairs with a physical/digital hybrid sculpture with an NFT.

The CryptoPunks collection launched by a free-to-mint project has made around over 2$ billion in secondary trading volume to date, as per the data from CryptoSlam.
