Sotheby’s to Auction 104 CryptoPunks NFTs This Month

Leading art auction house Sotheby’s announced Tuesday that it will auction off 104 CryptoPunks with an estimated sale between $20 million and $30 million, the highest price set to date for an NFT. The auction will be conducted live from Sotheby’s New York saleroom on February 23, 2022 at 7:00 PM EST, marking the auction house’s first dedicated live evening auction for NFTs. The exhibition will also feature a VIP dinner and a live party with a DJ named SeedPhrase among other live events. In the upcoming auction, Sotheby’s will accept cryptocurrencies where the winning bidder has the option to make final payment in Ether, Bitcoin, USD Coin, or any fiat currencies. https://twitter.com/Sothebys/status/1491094798526476288 This isn’t the first time Sotheby’s have dabbled in the world of high-profile NFTs. In September 2021, Sotheby’s auctioned off 104 Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs for $19 million which had surpassed its expected sale range of $12 million to $18 million. In June 2021, the auction house sold CryptoPunk #7523 for a record $11.8 million as part of its “Natively Digital” collection. A month later, it sold five hand-signed prints of CryptoPunks NFTs. In the lead-up to the auction, Sotheby’s will host a live panel discussion on the history of NFTs and how CryptoPunks exploded into mainstream recognition. Speakers will be announced at a later date and the talk will be live-streamed. A presale exhibition will also be held at the auction house’s New York headquarters February 18–23, along with a virtual display at Sotheby’s HQ in Decentraland.
