Mercedes-Benz NXT, the digital innovation division of the iconic automaker, has recently announced its entry into the non-fungible token (NFT) market with the launch of its inaugural collection, “Maschine“. This collection is a collaborative effort with renowned artist Harm van den Dorpel and Fingerprints DAO, a respected group of art collectors. “Maschine” explores motion, velocity, and perception themes through generative art, offering a unique perspective on these concepts.

The “Maschine” collection will be available exclusively through Fingerprints DAO’s website via a Dutch auction. This unique auction format gradually lowers the item’s price until a buyer is found. The auction is scheduled to start on June 7 and will feature 1,000 unique pieces (Ethereum-based tokens). Each piece showcases a captivating radial pattern of complex and ever-changing illusions inspired by the wagon-wheel effect.

The Dutch auction for “Maschine” will allow buyers who paid more than the final auction price to claim a refund equal to the difference between their purchase price and the final sell price. This rebate process will be done trustlessly using the auction contract, and participants will be able to observe the amount of rebate they have pending as the price decreases during the auction period.

In a recent Twitter thread, Mercedes-Benz NXT also shared its plans for its first three core collections. These collections, developed by the creative studio 0xNXT, will feature official Mercedes-Benz digital objects and will explore the brand’s design heritage. As mentioned, the first core collection (“Maschine”) focuses on generative art. The second core collection will be bestowed exclusively on a few selected Mercedes-Benz top customers, with each of the 1,886 collectibles to be minted at top-customer events. The third core collection will embark on a journey through Mercedes-Benz’s design heritage, with digital collectibles created by the Mercedes-Benz design team.

With a history spanning over 130 years, Mercedes-Benz NXT aims to bring the collectibility of physical objects to the digital realm. Enabled by blockchain technologies, the platform believes digital art and collectibles will play an increasingly significant role in our online experience. The German carmaker says that the formation of Mercedes-Benz NXT marks a long-term commitment to building a dedicated presence within the Web3 community and to blockchain-based digital objects.
