Dapper Labs, the firm behind CryptoKitties, has reached a deal with the National Football League (NFL) to create an NFT marketplace. The project will be similar along the lines of Dapper’s hit NBA Topshot.

NFL Version of NBA Top Shot

The Sports Business Journal reported on the upcoming NFT marketplace citing anonymous sources. Under the deal, the NFL and the NFL Players Association will receive equity in Dapper Labs and is expected to release before the end of the upcoming NFL season in early January 2022.

Similar to the popular NBA Topshot, the NFL version of the NFT marketplace will run on the Flow blockchain that will allow users to buy and sell NFT trading cards of the NFL sports highlight.

NBA Top Shot is a popular online marketplace that allows people to buy and sell NFTs of highlights officially licensed by the league and players association. The marketplace is similar to buying and selling physical trading cards in that each NFT is unique but some are rarer than others.

Back in March, Dapper Labs head of partnerships Caty Tedman said:

"If you think about the NFL, they don’t always do it first, but they try to do it best. So learning from the NBA is very much in their playbook. When we think about the kind of products that we would build with other partners, we think about customizing it for those fan bases. We can’t just slap NFL players on NBA Top Shot and make it work."

Video Content Will be the Main Element

Video content will be the central aspect of Dapper’s upcoming project, just as it has been for the company's NBA Topshot which has traded $780 million worth of collectibles so far this year from October 2020 through May and now currently sits around $700,000 over the last 30 days.

Just last week, Dapper Labs was valued at $7.6 billion on a $250 million fundraise led by Coatue and joined by Google’s GV and Andreesen Horowitz.
