Dfinity’s Internet Computer (ICP) blockchain is going to airdrop 10,000 free nonfungible tokens (NFTs) inspired by hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse.

Internet Computer to Foray Into Collectibles With 10K Free NFTs

Internet Computer is adding a clownish twist to digital collectibles with its debut NFT collection. The blockchain is about to release 10,000 free tokens inspired by American hip hop group Insane Clown Posse, who share the same acronym as the project.

The NFTs -- dubbed ICPunks -- were conceptualized by brothers Przemek and Tomasz Chojecki and Adam Stępnik. ICP holders were eligible to claim the tokens from 8 pm UTC on Wednesday.

Commenting on his expectations for the venture, Przemek, a co-founder of ICPunks, said:

“We’re incredibly excited for the launch of ICPunks on the Internet Computer. The NFT space is moving at such a rapid pace — it is amazing to be part of it. We have a lot of plans for ICPunks, including an NFT Marketplace, this is the first step towards that.”

According to Przemek’s brother Tomasz, the brothers had been following Dfinity since 2017. He was especially impressed by ICP’s NFT-friendly infrastructure that supports easy deployments:

“We believe the Internet Computer is the best solution for NFTs. One of the benefits of the Internet Computer is that all information is stored on-chain. There is no need to use IPFS or dedicated web servers to host images. It’s truly a decentralized NFT solution.”

NFTs Record Explosive Growth in August

Dfinity’s entry into the NFT space comes at an opportune moment as demand for collectibles is at an all-time high. As reported previously, NFT marketplace Opensea recorded over $1 billion in trade volumes last month. Also, financial services giant Visa revealed that it had acquired a CryptoPunk NFT for more than $150,000.

Meanwhile, the lineup of new NFT launches continues to expand with more celebrities introducing their collections. Earlier this week, tennis sensation Naomi Osaka announced that she will be rolling out a collection of rare tokens before the U.S. Open Tournament.
