The expansion gives eligible customers a broader range of equity exposures to hold alongside crypto in a Kraken account. But buying an xStock is not the same as owning the underlying company's shares.
The tokens are issued by Jersey-based Backed Assets (JE) Limited. Kraken's risk disclosure says each xStock is backed 1:1 by its underlying stock, which is held at depositary institutions rather than by Kraken. Its FAQ identifies Alpaca Securities as a custodian and InCore Bank as a secondary custodian.
Holders receive price exposure, not voting rights or ownership of the underlying shares. Dividend benefits are reinvested rather than paid to holders in cash, according to Kraken. The risk disclosure warns that investors also face the financial and operational risks of Kraken and Backed, as well as the credit risk of collateral custodians.
Kraken's FAQ lists Solana, Ethereum, TON and Ink as networks for withdrawals to compatible wallets, where tokens can be transferred onchain. That extends the model beyond an exchange account; Kraken had already announced an Ethereum expansion in September 2025.
Access also varies by jurisdiction. Kraken's availability page says European Economic Area customers must pass an appropriateness questionnaire and can buy, sell and convert xStocks using fiat only. Other eligible regions can use both crypto and fiat.
Kraken says holders can redeem xStocks with Backed for an additional fee or sell them on its platform. The tokens cannot be transferred into a traditional brokerage account.
