Lighter has launched binary options on its Core trading system, adding $BTC and $ETH Up/Down contracts that pay winning holders 1 $USDC per share. The decentralized exchange announced the launch on Oct. 19, and its mainnet API showed active markets, quotes and completed trades.

The live contracts measure price direction over recurring 15-minute windows. Up wins when the underlying asset’s closing Chainlink price is at least its opening price; otherwise, Down wins. Traders are buying a fixed payout on direction, rather than exposure to the size of the price move.

According to Lighter’s contract documentation, orders and positions must be fully funded from a $USDC balance, with no leverage, funding payments or liquidations. Losing shares expire worthless, so a trader can lose the amount paid for the position.

Early activity was small. Shortly after the announcement, a pair of active $BTC and $ETH contracts showed lifetime quote-token volumes of about 161 $USDC and 225 $USDC, respectively, with reported open interest of about 56 and 233 shares. Those figures describe two individual contracts, not cumulative activity across the rolling series.

For scale, Lighter’s $BTC perpetual market alone reported roughly $1 billion in 24-hour volume. That is a longer window and a different exposure measure than the new binaries’ quote-token turnover, not a like-for-like market-share comparison.

Fully Funded Trades, Operator-Led Settlement

The binaries are available through Lighter’s existing API transaction and signing system. Buying opens or adds to an Up position; selling opens or adds to a Down position, with an opposite-side trade reducing an existing position first. Up shares trade between 0.01 and 0.99 $USDC.

Lighter operates the Up/Down series. When an observation window ends, the market waits for the operator to initiate settlement using the price source. Remaining orders are cancelled before payouts reach traders’ $USDC balances, according to the settlement documentation. If no outcome can be determined, both sides receive 0.50 $USDC per share.

The cash-funded design differs from the exchange’s perpetuals offering, where Lighter previously introduced $ETH as non-$USDC margin collateral. Public pool and insurance fund accounts cannot trade the binary markets, its trading rules say.

Access remains subject to Lighter’s terms, which exclude people and entities in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and China, among other jurisdictions. The restrictions cover its interface and related API.

“Next up: our full options offering,” Lighter said in the launch post, without giving a release date.
