Scope And Limits
The feature is gated to Coinbase's DEX rails rather than its standard listed markets. Coinbase's product page states that "DEX trading requires users to create a self-custody wallet prior to trading" and that the "DEX trading feature not available in all locations."
Coinbase's post did not specify which app surface hosts the tab or enumerate supported regions, and the exchange has not published a public screening threshold for which newly-live tokens appear. At its December DEX presentation, a Coinbase specialist said trading would be available for tokens with "sufficient liquidity" without defining that bar, per prior Defiant reporting.
Onchain Buildout
The launch extends a run of onchain moves by the largest U.S. crypto exchange. Coinbase's DEX first supported its own Ethereum Layer 2, Base, with plans to add more networks, and in December said it would add native trading of Solana-based tokens routed to onchain liquidity, The Defiant reported.
In November, Coinbase announced it was acquiring Solana-based trading platform Vector, folding its team and token-tracking tools into the DEX system to help list new tokens faster. Vector was built by the team behind NFT marketplace Tensor as a SocialFi app for trading Solana memecoins.
The Launches tab puts Coinbase in more direct competition with dedicated launch and memecoin venues that let traders act on tokens the moment they hit the market. Coinbase has not disclosed which surface of its app the tab runs on or the full list of eligible regions.
