The Argentina-Spain World Cup final generated $5.69 billion in combined prediction-market volume, turning Sunday’s match into the year’s largest sports wagering event. Per reports, Polymarket handled $4.28 billion through its tournament winner contract, while Kalshi recorded $1.29 billion on its separate final market before kickoff.

Spain entered as the clear favorite on both platforms. On Polymarket, Spain traded near 59 cents, while Argentina stood near 40 cents before settlement. Similarly, Kalshi showed almost identical pricing, placing Spain at 59% and Argentina at 41.6%, despite each exchange operating an independent order book.

$5.69B Final Volume Outpaces Major U.S. Sports Markets

The closely aligned odds contrasted with how users allocated capital. Polymarket recorded $123.5 million backing Spain and $158 million supporting Argentina. That imbalance showed that more money moved toward the underdog, even though market prices consistently assigned the favorite a higher probability.

Kalshi’s category included Golden Boot and viewership contracts, while Polymarket hosted a $66 million top-scorer market. Combined trading across dozens of tournament contracts exceeded $25 billion before Sunday, far above roughly $2 billion for the NBA Finals.

The total also eclipsed the approximately $1 billion recorded for the Super Bowl, highlighting the tournament’s exceptional scale across prediction markets. Moreover, Polymarket’s World Cup winner contract surged from $2.6 billion in early July to $4.28 billion by kickoff, making it the platform’s largest single event.

World Cup Trading Lifts Monthly Platform Volume to Records

The surge in tournament-related trading also lifted broader platform activity to record levels. Kalshi recorded more than $31 billion in notional volume during June, an increase of over 70% from May’s $17.9 billion, according to user-collected Dune Analytics data.

Moreover, daily trading remained above $1 billion after the World Cup began on June 11, while open interest later exceeded $1 billion. Polymarket experienced a similar rebound. Its international exchange surpassed $10.8 billion in June trading volume, reversing the declines recorded in April and May.

Meanwhile, the platform’s United States operation generated more than $3.5 billion, nearly doubling May’s total of $1.77 billion. As trading activity accelerated, both platforms also expanded their commercial presence around the tournament.

FIFA named Kalshi its official prediction-market partner, granting the company branding, venue access, and distribution rights through Fox Sports during the competition. Polymarket, by comparison, promoted a $2 million perfect-bracket contest. Together, these initiatives helped both platforms capitalize on the World Cup to attract users, increase engagement, and broaden participation.
