US users of PayPal can now make purchases across China using the QR-code merchant network of WeChat Pay, according to an announcement made by Tencent Financial Technology on Wednesday.
The company said the service will initially be available for US PayPal users and will later be rolled out in phases to PayPal users in other markets.
Tencent links TenPay Global with PayPal World
According to a social media post cited by Tencent Financial Technology, vice president Daniel Hong said Tencent’s cross-border payment platform, TenPay Global, has now been connected to PayPal World.
The integration is expected to allow PayPal users to make payments through WeChat Pay’s extensive QR-code merchant network in China.
The move marks a significant step in cross-border digital payments as China continues to expand payment access for overseas visitors and international consumers.
Tencent also said it is introducing incentives aimed at encouraging the use of foreign bank cards linked to WeChat Pay.
These incentives include temporary fee waivers that will remain in place through 2026.
Support measures planned ahead of the APEC meeting
Tencent said it will further expand language support and on-the-ground assistance for international users in Shenzhen ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting scheduled for November.
The company did not disclose additional operational details regarding the expansion but indicated the measures are intended to improve payment accessibility for foreign users visiting China.
WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate China’s payments market
China’s digital payments industry is primarily dominated by Ant Group’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay.
The two platforms support a wide range of daily transactions across retail, transportation, and services in what is considered the world’s largest mobile payments market.
WeChat itself has evolved into a broader “super app” ecosystem developed by Tencent.
The platform combines messaging, social networking, and digital payments into a single application and has more than 1.3 billion active users.
PayPal expands international payment convenience
PayPal operates as a digital wallet and online payments platform that allows users to send and receive money without directly sharing banking or card information with merchants.
The platform enables users to connect bank accounts or credit cards to make purchases, transfer funds, and manage international business transactions.
PayPal also acts as an intermediary during online purchases, helping protect users’ financial information.
Eligible purchases made through the platform are also covered by PayPal Purchase Protection policies.
WeChat’s ecosystem extends beyond payments
In addition to payments, WeChat provides messaging, voice notes, and video calling features, along with built-in real-time text translation tools widely used by international users.
The app also includes “Mini Programs,” which allow users to access services such as shopping, ride booking, and gaming without downloading separate applications.
Other features include “Moments,” a social feed for sharing updates, photos, and videos, as well as “Official Accounts” operated by businesses, media organisations, and public figures for distributing news and updates.
