In Q4 2025, Thailand said it would introduce a national crypto sandbox. This is after a 2024 pilot in Phuket in which the use of digital payments enhanced the convenience of tourism. The project will make Thailand a crypto-friendly travel destination and considers declining tourist visitations in 2025.
An Economic Strategy Behind the Move
Thailand relies greatly on tourism, as this industry comprises almost 20 percent of the GDP in the country. According to Bangkok Post, the arrivals of tourists in the first part of 2025 decreased by 5 percent -16.6 million against 17.5 million in 2024. The introduction of digital payments to Thailand has contributed to its plans to boost and its economy and appeal to the more sophisticated tourists.
Regulation and Regulatory Control
Two authorities, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bank of Thailand (BOT), will operate the sandbox jointly. In March and July 2025, the SEC authorised the framework, and consultations commenced until August 13, 2025. The tourists will be able to convert digital assets through licensed operators and e- wallets in BOT will govern payments. The tourists will trade crypto via licensed platforms and pay Thailand baht by means of QR code payments and e-wallet payments. But mining and airdrop income is taxable.
