Chinese tech giant Tencent has announced that WeChat users will be able to make payments using the country's central bank digital currency (CBDC). The payments can be made through in-app applets and video channels within the WeChat ecosystem, without needing to leave the app. Merchants who accept payments via WeChat will need to ensure they have the necessary software to accept digital CNY payments. The use of the digital yuan has been accelerating, with 26 regions in 17 provinces now using the token.
