Gaming giant Ubisoft announced Thursday that it will release Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, its first original blockchain game, on October 23. The tactical PC role-playing game will be launched on the Oasys Home Verse gaming network.
The game allows players to assemble teams of "Champions"—digital collectibles with unique abilities—to engage in player-versus-player battles in a dark fantasy setting. The game features 75,000 Champion characters and includes a crafting system called The Forge, where players can combine existing Champions to create new ones with different traits.
"With Champions Tactics, we aim for Web3 technology to seamlessly fade into the background, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the fun and strategy of the game," said Nicolas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft's Strategic Innovation Lab, in a release.

The game features 75,000 Champion characters and includes a crafting system called The Forge, where players can combine existing Champions to create new ones with different traits. The development team includes veterans who have worked on major Ubisoft franchises like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry.
In addition to the 75,000 Champion NFTs minted on Oasys, Ubisoft also launched 9,999 free Ethereum NFT profile pictures (PFPs) in late 2023 in a project called The Warlords. Those NFTs now start at a price of $60 worth of ETH on secondary marketplaces.
"This isn't GameFi—it's about pure, immersive gameplay that draws players in, while giving them the freedom to own their assets and shape the game's future,” said Executive Producer Sylvain Loe-Mie, in a release.
Ubisoft has been playing in the crypto world for years now, including launching Tezos-based NFTs for its Ghost Recon: Breakpoint PC game in 2021. The firm recently announced another upcoming blockchain game, Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., which will be launched on Ethereum scaling network Arbitrum.
