Base’s borrowing guide illustrates borrowing $USDC against wrapped Ether, or WETH, through the Aave V3 pool on Base at a variable rate. It also provides a Morpho WETH/$USDC example. A separate earn guide shows $USDC deposits into the Steakhouse Prime $USDC vault on Morpho. These are integration examples; supported assets vary by market.
The public offering is aimed at businesses building products: Base has published integration guides and invites platforms to contact its team. Its announcement and product page do not identify live customer apps or establish U.S. availability. Base says eligibility, fees, loan terms and availability depend on the platform, protocol and jurisdiction.
The approach builds on an existing distribution model for DeFi lending. As The Defiant previously reported, Ledger began rolling out wrapped-Bitcoin-backed stablecoin loans through Morpho on Oct. 7, bringing protocol borrowing into its wallet app.
Borrowers Still Face Liquidation
Borrowers bear liquidation risk under the underlying lending protocol’s rules. On Aave, liquidation becomes possible when a position’s health factor—a measure of collateral coverage—falls below 1. A liquidator repays debt and receives collateral plus a liquidation bonus. Aave Governance sets the liquidation threshold for each collateral asset.
Base’s borrowing documentation warns that collateral prices, oracle updates, interest and protocol parameters can push a position toward liquidation. The product page also says Base and Coinbase do not curate, manage or guarantee vaults, which are run by independent curators.
For stablecoin suppliers, the return comes principally from interest paid by borrowers on overcollateralized loans. Rates are variable, and withdrawals remain subject to available liquidity and protocol terms.
