OpenAI is developing a social network that could use biometric verification tools such as Apple Face ID or World’s iris-scanning Orb to ensure users are real people rather than bots, according to a Forbes report.

The project remains in early development, built by an internal team of fewer than ten people. Sources familiar with the effort described the platform as “real humans only” network, positioning OpenAI against bot-driven engagement that has plagued platforms such as X.

The proposed identity checks would rely on proof-of-personhood systems including World’s Orb, which creates a unique identifier from a user’s iris. World is operated by Tools for Humanity, a company founded by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.

The report sparked renewed interest in World, with its native WLD token surging more than 25% on the day to around $0.55.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns about biometric verification models, warning that iris scans are permanent and could pose long-term risks if compromised. Sources cautioned that OpenAI’s plans could still change significantly and that there is no set timeline for a public launch.
