Ethereum Name Service (ENS), a decentralized domain naming system running on the Ethereum blockchain, has joined forces with GoDaddy, a prominent domain registrar.
This partnership aims to simplify the process for users to associate their wallets with web pages.
ENS serves as the blockchain equivalent of the traditional Domain Name System (DNS) used in Web2. DNS assigns unique IP addresses to devices, translating them into user-friendly domain names for accessing internet web pages. Similarly, ENS transforms complex wallet addresses into easily readable names.
In a recent collaboration with GoDaddy, one of the largest web hosting providers globally, users can link their streamlined ENS wallet addresses with their DNS. This integration facilitates a connection between the worlds of Web2 and Web3, yet it raises concerns, particularly regarding censorship issues.
For instance, Kubi Mensah, co-founder of Gattaca, shared an incident where the domain was unexpectedly suspended without prior notice. While the problem was eventually resolved by escalating the concerns to the domain provider’s senior management, the reason for the suspension remained undisclosed.

Despite the decentralized nature of Web3 domains, providing resistance against censorship and tampering, there are still challenges. Nick Johnson, founder and lead developer of ENS, emphasized that ENS .eth domains are inherently censorship-resistant and tamper-proof. Even the ENS DAO lacks the authority to revoke or restrict a .eth domain.
Nevertheless, this collaboration serves as a bridge for Web2 domain users to explore blockchain technologies through their domains. It is essential to note that the ownership of a DNS domain ultimately lies with the registrar, and names imported from DNS through this collaboration remain subject to the rules imposed by the registrar and ICANN, according to Johnson.
