What Would Happen If Satoshi Nakamoto Moved His Bitcoins?

$ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood said that recent research in artificial intelligence and quantum computing has changed her perspective on the long-dormant $BTC attributed to Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto.

Speaking on $ARK Invest’s FYI podcast, Wood and other participants discussed the potential threats that quantum computers could pose to Bitcoin’s cryptographic systems in the future, and how artificial intelligence could be used to defend against these risks.

Wood noted that AI is accelerating quantum research, and that Bitcoin developers are also beginning to use the same technology to enhance network security. One developer featured in the podcast stated that recent findings from AI-powered security efforts are being reviewed by Bitcoin Core developers, and some fixes are being directly implemented into Bitcoin Core.

The most noteworthy part of the discussion was what it might mean if the Bitcoins believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto were to move one day.

According to participants, the movement of $BTC linked to Satoshi may not point to a single scenario. Possible causes include the owner moving the coins to new addresses, switching to more secure signature systems to protect against a potential quantum threat, or attackers gaining access to the private keys.

The podcast also discussed the possibility that unexpected movements in Satoshi’s coins could be negatively impacted by the market in the short term. However, it was noted that new signature schemes are being tested for Bitcoin and various protocol solutions are being developed for a future transition to quantum-resistant systems.

Wood also said that the movement of large, long-inactive Bitcoin wallets could be unsettling for investors, but his concerns have somewhat diminished as research in AI and quantum computing advances.

Investors in the prediction markets are pricing in only about a 3% chance that the Bitcoins attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto will move before the end of 2026.
