Litecoin launched without an initial coin offering or a pre-allocated supply for its founders. Its code was released four days before the network went live, and the community participated in choosing the launch date.
Litecoin Surpasses 418 Million Transactions
The network processed its 300 millionth transaction in January 2025 and has now recorded more than 418 million transactions.
In 2024 alone, it processed more than 92 million transactions, compared with approximately 67 million in 2023. That year, average daily transaction fees remained below $0.01.

Litecoin also became one of the most widely used cryptocurrencies for payments through BitPay. In June 2024, it accounted for 40.91% of transactions processed by the platform.
On the development side, the blockchain activated SegWit in May 2017, ahead of Bitcoin, and supported one of the first real-world payments through the Lightning Network.
Since 2014, $LTC has also supported merged mining with Dogecoin, allowing miners to use the same computational work to secure both networks.
Privacy, ETFs, and Institutional Adoption
In 2022, Litecoin introduced MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB), a technology that enables optional confidential transactions.
The balance held through MWEB reached a record 567,921 $LTC in September 2026, according to data compiled by the project.
Adoption also extended into institutional markets. In 2025, Luxxfolio and Lite Strategy began using $LTC as a corporate treasury reserve asset.
Lite Strategy holds more than 929,000 $LTC, while November 2025 saw the approval of the first U.S. spot Litecoin ETF, introduced by Canary Capital.
The network’s next halving is expected in July 2027, when the block reward will fall from 6.25 to 3.125 $LTC. Litecoin’s maximum supply is capped at 84 million coins.
