Why Did The Network Choose The Name?
The company’s own records show when the name arrived, but not why.
What The Record Shows
Hedera’s official timeline lists these steps:
- 2012 to 2015: Leemon Baird invents the hashgraph. He and Mance Harmon then form Swirlds, Inc.
- May 31, 2016: The hashgraph whitepaper is published.
- 2018: “Hedera” is selected as the brand and company name, and the $HBAR logo is designed.
- August 24, 2018: Mainnet goes live, and all 50 billion $HBAR are minted.
- September 16, 2019: Mainnet opens to the public.
The Ivy Theory
The most common reading links the network to the plant’s growth. In September 2018, Decrypt writer Adriana Hamacher noted the ivy connection and asked whether the technology, “like its namesake,” was “fast growing, resilient and imminently scalable.” That was speculation, not a company statement, and it should be read that way.
Where Does The $HBAR Ticker Come From?
“Some people think $HBAR represents the bars in the Hedera logomark,” the official Hedera account posted on X. “It’s actually from physics. H-bar (ℏ) is the unit that makes quantum physics consistent.”
The reduced Planck constant is the Planck constant divided by 2π. It is one of the smallest fundamental constants in physics. As early as 2019, a Medium explainer by Ishita Bora tied that smallness to $HBAR’s role in micropayments.
The currency symbol is ℏ, written in lowercase italics. The Hedera logo uses a capital Ħ.
How $HBAR Is Divided
Like Bitcoin’s satoshi, $HBAR splits into smaller units. Hedera’s SDK lists these
Tinybar: the smallest unit, where 1 $HBAR equals 100,000,000 tinybars
- Microbar: 100 tinybars
- Millibar: 100,000 tinybars
- Kilobar, megabar, and gigabar: 1,000, 1 million, and 1 billion $HBAR
Developers work in tinybars to calculate fees precisely.
How Are Hashgraph And Hedera Different?
The two names are often mixed up. Hashgraph is the consensus algorithm, the method nodes use to agree on the order of transactions. Hedera is the public network that runs it.
Swirlds originally held the hashgraph patents. In 2022, Hedera’s council voted to buy the patent rights and release the algorithm under the Apache 2.0 open-source license. In 2024, the codebase moved to the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust, where the project is now called Hiero. In 2025, the Governing Council was renamed the Hedera Council.
What Is Happening With Hedera Now?
The past few weeks brought several developments:
- IBM: On September 23, the Hashgraph Group’s IDTrust identity product, built on Hedera, was listed in the IBM Cloud Catalog. $HBAR jumped more than 20% to just under $0.13 on September 28, then gave back most of the gain.
- Hitachi: Hitachi officially left the Hedera Council on September 30, 2026, after completing its scheduled multi-year term that began in January 2024.
-
Stablecoins: USDC on Hedera rose to about $46 million from about $27 million in a week, according to DefiLlama.
These sit on top of existing integrations. Since April 2025, Hedera has run Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), Data Feeds, and Proof of Reserve on mainnet. CCIP lets Hedera apps move tokens and data to other blockchains.
$HBAR has 43.998 billion tokens in circulation out of a fixed 50 billion supply, for a market cap of $4.085 billion. It sits about 84% below its $0.5692 all-time high.
Conclusion
Hedera’s name comes from the Latin word for ivy, chosen in 2018 without a published official reason. Its $HBAR ticker comes from ħ, the reduced Planck constant, and divides down to the tinybar for precise fees. The network runs the hashgraph algorithm, is governed by a 33-member council, and connects to other chains through Chainlink CCIP.
