The release follows Ripple's established practice of unlocking $XRP at the beginning of each month from its escrow accounts. While the headline figure is 1 billion $XRP, the entire amount does not necessarily enter the circulating market.
Ripple has often returned a large portion (about 700 to 800 million $XRP) of unlocked $XRP to escrow, with the remainder used for operational purposes, ecosystem initiatives, and other activities.
According to XRPScan data, the total $XRP escrowed is given as 31,845,130,805 $XRP (31.9% of supply), while the $XRP circulating supply is given as 68,126,080,636 (68.1% of total supply of 100 billion $XRP). A total of 14,394,279 $XRP has been burned so far (0.014% of supply).
The next 24 hours will be watched to see how much Ripple returns to its escrow to get the exact amount of $XRP left. For now, 31.845 billion $XRP remains escrowed, down from over 32.4 billion $XRP reported months back.
