Cardano has successfully launched its first zero-knowledge (ZK) smart contract on the mainnet, marking a major achievement. The transaction was executed by Input Output using Halo 2’s zkSNARK technology and demonstrates Cardano’s focus on innovation and scalability in the blockchain space.

Sebastien GUILLEMOT, co-founder of dcSpark, said the transaction marks the beginning of ZK applications on the Cardano network. The Electric Coin Company originally developed the Halo 2 proof system to run and verify cryptographic proofs without having to rely on a trusted setup.

The first transaction was intended to freeze funds, and the second used Halo 2’s Zero Knowledge proof to unfreeze them. This process took some time and required a small cost of 2.03ADA, about $1.90, which Input Output considers “reasonably low.” Some of the features of Halo 2 are recursive proofs, which allow large problems to be broken down into a series of simpler problems. This feature is important for increasing the scalability and connectivity of the blockchain.
