The Filecoin Foundation has shared developments on implementing IPFS, an acronym for InterPlanetary File System. Per the announcement, the demonstration has successfully sent the IPFS White Paper and an image of Biscuit to an orbiting satellite and received it back. This was done in association with Lockheed Martin’s SmartSat technology. The satellite in question is LM LINUSS CubeSat.

Filecoin Foundation has hailed this result and expressed confidence in advancing to the next stage, which takes it a step closer to the final implementation.

The necessity for a decentralized system for space communication has arisen as centralized Internet models lag in terms of data transfer speed. While the influence is less noticeable on Earth, it is more significant when considering the impact in space or on the Moon. Simply explained, the centralized model of the Internet stores data on a single server. The seeker must retrieve data exclusively from that particular point, regardless of the actual distance.

Compared to that, the decentralized model stores the data but not on a particular server. In fact, the seeker can retrieve data from the closest point to them. Hence, it saves time in the transmission and storage of data. Moreover, IPFS has proven its utility in a challenging environment with this demonstration.

Marta Belcher, the President and Chair of the Filecoin Foundation has said that they are thrilled to make their vision a reality. Marta has also thanked the team at Lockheed Martin Space, adding that their vision has always been to enable communication in space.

There are several benefits that IPFS has demonstrated till now. This includes faster communication, data verification, and data resilience.

Faster communication is an aspect that has been extensively covered, stating that a seeker can retrieve data from the nearest point without having to rely on a particular server. Data verification pertains to checking the authenticity of the data through the Content ID and knowing if the data has been tampered with. Data resilience makes it convenient but tells the seeker the precise details about the data instead of sharing only the location. This enhanced their efforts to know what they should look for at a faster speed.

This development has sparked bullish sentiments among the FIL community members. The native token has yet to reflect those sentiments since it is trading at $5.77 with a slip of 1.89% in the last 24 hours. Nevertheless, there has been a jump of 3.90% in the last 7 days, and the Filecoin forecast predicts that there is a chance for FIL to end 2024 at $8.20. Alternatively, FIL is estimated to end the current year at $5.70.

Moving forward, the Filecoin Foundation is aiming to improve the results that it has achieved in recent demonstrations. That will pave the way for a practical and wide-scale implementation of the technology that allows the transfer of files to space.
