The native token of the Optimism blockchain, OP, surged after an engineer at the crypto arm of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) tweeted an image of an orange circle accompanied by the phrase "coming soon." The color of the circle in the tweet matched the color commonly associated with the a16z logo.
Earlier this year, Coinbase announced its Optimism-powered layer 2 network called Base by posting a blue circle on Twitter. The similarity of the images led traders to speculate that a16z might have plans to launch its own layer 2 blockchain. As a result, the price of the OP token rose by 3%.
Eddy LAZZARIN, CTO of a16z, subsequently tweeted "not L2", apparently denying the possibility. A16z and Paradigm jointly led a $150 mln Optimism funding round in March 2022 that valued the Ethereum scaling solution at $1.65 bln.
