Cardano’s much-anticipated Alonzo Purple upgrade has begun onboarding users to its testnet as per schedule, as revealed by the IOHK team on Twitter. This mark is the milestone event for the ADA community since it will be the first fully public Cardano testnet to support smart contracts.

Cardano's Alonzo Purple Public Testnet Goes Live

"This is an exciting and important next step in the #Alonzo journey, In fact, the #Cardano journey. With the support of our OG community testers on the Blue & White phases, #AlonzoPurple will be the first fully public Cardano testnet to support #smartcontracts."

The IOHK team also said that it’s been coordinating with crypto exchanges in preparation for the update to ensure that ADA holders can smoothly transition into Cardano’s smart contract era.

Full support for smart contracts on the network is expected to reach by the end of August or early September as confirmed by the IOHK team on Twitter:

“It’s an important moment, marking significant progress in the rollout of #smartcontracts on the #Cardano mainnet which is targeted for the end of August/early September.”

Alonzo is Smoother than Byron and Shelley: Cardano CEO

Speaking of the update on Twitter, Cardano CEO and founder of IOHK Charles Hoskinson, said via a video on Twitter:

“Alonzo’s a lot smoother than Byron and Shelley, a lot more is being upgraded, but the process of upgrading has been so refined it’s amazing we can flip a switch as an ecosystem and it just works on the other side.”

Alonzo will be the last stage of Cardano’s Goguen era that will make it possible to write smart contracts on the Cardano blockchain in the Plutus programming language.
