Ripple active nodes outnumbered by Bitcoin listening nodes

A Twitter user recently pointed out the apparently low level of adoption for the Ripple network. Entrepreneur Alistair Milne compared its total number of active nodes to those of Bitcoin.

Milne used blockchain data, to make the point that the number of Ripple addresses that have been active in the last 24 hours is smaller than the total number of listening nodes on Bitcoin. There had been just 8346 nodes with transactions on Ripple, compared to 9556 reachable nodes on Bitcoin, and the total non-reachable nodes would have been 10 times this figure.

Milne seems to be suggesting that Ripple adoption isn't growing as fast as many in the community seem to think it is, and Bitcoin's dominance over the network is still strong. Some responses to the tweet took the opportunity to call out the apparent lies of the divisive 'XRP army', an often aggressive online community of Ripple enthusiasts.

However, some observers pointed out that differences in how the networks operate are important. The Ripple community encourages users to re-use nodes, so that could go some way towards explaining why there were so few active addresses.

One caveat here is that XRPL encourages address reuse and has additional transaction data. So if you're paying in XRP you typically send to the same address as everyone else and add some additional data to identify your transaction.
