Statement of escaped suspect connected to Iceland mining rigs case published

22 April 2018 21:00, UTC

If the information posted by one of the outlets of Iceland is not fake, Sindri Thor Stefansson insists that his escape was lawful, as he was under arrest for several months and transferred in solitary confinement after the police failed to get the information they needed from him.

Moreover, the escapee boasts about the fake identity he has acquired with the help of his friends and even announces his return to Iceland as he has some unfinished business in the country. The decision to tell about both leaves him without any notable tactical advantages. It’s either the statement is completely fake or his escape has made him overconfident.

The police of Iceland, however, has treated this statement as if it was not fake: Ólafur Helgi Kjartansson, leader of the regional department, has called Stefansson’s arguments “nonsense”, although he has confirmed the information about the fake identity.

As a reminder, Sindri Thor Stefansson is a suspect in the case about 600 mining rigs stolen in Iceland at the beginning of this year. Mining rigs are extremely valuable due to the computational ability of their components powerful enough to produce new Bitcoin units efficiently, which is now very difficult in comparison to the year cryptocurrency was invented.
