Man suspected in Bitcoin mining rigs theft escapes correctional facility
Several hundred of Bitcoin mining rigs in Iceland were stolen allegedly with the help of Sindri Thor Stefansson who has escaped Sogni prison. First reports on the topic date back to April 17 2018. What’s even more strange - some reports tell that the suspect has managed not only to escape the correctional facility, he has flew to Stockholm (Sweden) on the same plane the Prime Minister of the country boarded.
The reports tell that the facility was not a stereotypical movie prison with strict regime: the establishment in Sogni had low security. The local police suspects that the escapee had a friend outside the prison who helped him to get out.
The theft of 600 Bitcoin mining rigs in Iceland left many in wonder on how this is even possible. This means that a big criminal organization is to blame, and indeed, 20 individuals has been apprehended since the time of the first messages on that massive crime.
Mining rigs are valuable due to their ability to get cryptocurrency by using special algorithms. This opportunity has been first introduced almost certainly by Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin who remains anonymous even to this day. The mechanism of mining has been repeated in other altcoins, although it may vary from cryptocurrency to cryptocurrency.
