Bitfinex suspends service for American customers

13 August 2017 21:00, UTC

The major cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex that takes the third place in the world on trade turnover stops to receive verification requests from the United States and will not further allow American investors to buy the tokens which the US regulative organs will consider not entirely legitimate. This measure will prevent all possible conflicts with the US authorities. Apart from this, the exchange plans to turn off all its services for American clients in 90 days, CoinDesk reports.

Bitfinex motivates this decision by the recent legal act from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to consider token trade equal to securities trade; the exchange also tells that American laws on cryptocurrency are seemingly going to become even more strict in the future.

This exchange might not be the only one to do this, others too might want to avoid consequences of non-compliance with recent SEC regulations.

It is, however, to be reminded that recently Bitfinex has introduced a new Ethereum trade platform which expanded the list of investors’ opportunities.
