Opera to introduce anti-mining shield called NoCoin soon

26 December 2017 21:00, UTC

Mining viruses use the resources of infected computers to get cryptocurrency for hackers - and victims are the ones who are paying for energy and see their computers lagging. The team of the popular browser called Opera plans to shield their software from such viruses, which, if proven efficient, will increase the popularity of the browser, although the team would not ever admit this is one of their goals.

As reminded by the team members, their browser is the only one which has built-in advertisement protection, and it would be natural to implement defense from mining viruses as well. Although some versions of malvertising work only when the tab with the infected site is open, they still hijack resources which is unacceptable, the representatives of Opera tell.

There is no reason to believe other browser teams will stand idly and do nothing with this new threat — for example, one of the Chrome developers already offered means of protection from such malevolent scripts.

The server software developers should think about this danger as well, because hackers, being aware of the fact server hardware is powerful, are often trying to hijack the resources of computers used for site hosting.
