“NoReplay”: clumsy hackers impersonating WEX management make funny errors

20 September 2017 21:00, UTC

A Russian cryptocurrency enthusiast has received a peculiar e-mail message from fraudsters posing as recently opened WEX exchange and posted about this on Telegraph. The grammar of this email was so bad that any native English speaker would smile: “All users who deposit on our platform will get in 2 days , 40% bonus”. Another notable and entertaining mistake was found – instead of standard “noreply” (which usually indicates there is no sense replying to the automatic email account) the hackers wrote “noreplay”, like it’s all a football match or a NASCAR race.

This is all very funny until we remember that some people actually fell for this. The cryptocurrency enthusiast who posted the screenshots of the email was interested how many and went to the blockchain logs to check the account mentioned in the message. Turns out that some people sent a sum totaling to 12 BTC, or 46416.96 US Dollars at the press time.

Sadly, not all know about phishing and typical signs of fraud. Be careful not to repeat their mistakes: as seen from the example above, hackers often pose as the exchange management and make stupid errors in the email message. Even if they don’t, double check the message and contact the management of the exchange to clarify if the message is legitimate.
