Mining at work becomes a pain in the neck for bosses

17 December 2017 21:00, UTC

In summer this year, we have seen reports about an official in New York City who mined cryptocurrency at work and after the management noticed strange spikes in power consumption stats, was found guilty of using the employers’ resources for his own benefit. The same story lately happened in Russia, where the system administrator responsible for the work of computers in the air traffic control center apparently thought nobody would notice the same power consumption stats oddity which already destroyed the hidden entrepreneurship of that official in New York Education Department.

And another serious violation of corporate rules happened in Transneft, the Russian oil company. According to various media outlets, the computers of this corporation mined Monero without authorization from the management and, quite amusingly, some press messages say this was due to a virus, and some — due to a group of employees who decided to use the “free” energy and computers. The exact statement by the leader of the company leaves room for both interpretations, as he simply stated “unauthorized mining has been detected”.
