Coinbase and Bitfinex down
Bitfinex seems to be under attack, as around 9:45 a.m. ET (12/12/2017) is was offline, which has been confirmed by multiple media sources. This exchange was recently described by the NYT (in “Warning Signs About Another Giant Bitcoin Exchange” by Nathaniel Popper) as experiencing internal problems which may lead to its collapse like it happened with Mt Gox, but the exchange strictly denied all rumors regarding its supposedly bad condition.
Coinbase is another story. Early reports suggest that the exchange was offline around the same time and the site was unavailable altogether, but Bitnewstoday checked it and its wallet service seems to be working almost without problems. However, it opened only from the second try, and this leads to believe that the trading mechanism might, too, still work with occasional glitches.
Bitfinex’s potential collapse could lead to the decrease of both coins’ price and of their reputation. However, we must reiterate it is still premature to talk about it as if it happened already. Bitnewstoday will keep you updated on the status of Bitfinex, as the exchange is too big to simply ignore.
