Blockchain candidate to run for mayor of Taipei, Taiwan
Yi-Ting Cheng will run for mayor of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Widely known under the nickname of xdite, this programmer has previously won a Grand Prix on one of the hackathons of Facebook and worked in technology and coding spheres.
According to her post on Facebook, other candidates have no idea what kind of a world they now live in due to their advanced age ranging from 60 to over 70. Another reason she provides is her team-leading experience. Indeed, she has headed a coding camp in the past and was a Chief Technical Officer in one of the Chinese blockchain-related companies.
Her political program includes the mentioning of blockchain as a means of transforming Taipei into the city of digital era, efficiently governed and financially attractive. However, her close ties with China might not attract some part of the electorate.
Taiwan itself is relatively calm about cryptocurrencies and blockchain. For example, the CEO of the vast local exchange familiar with lawmakers has once stressed that Taiwan will not repeat the actions of the neighboring China towards ICOs because they don’t want to upset the younger generation. Evidently, this decision was prudent, as later, the younger generation of South Korea has actually caused a heated argument about the crypto regulation when the government implied it may seriously tighten it.
