Bithumb hacked — approximately $30M stolen and withdrawals now halted

19 June 2018 21:00, UTC

Bithumb has been hacked, both the cryptocurrency and fiat finance outlets report. According to the observers, the hack was successful with an estimated sum of $30M funds stolen.

The exchange has confirmed the news and stated that now it’s moving all assets to cold storages - or hardware wallets, meaning that no hackers would access them online anymore. WIthdrawals are halted until further notice. Sentinel Protocol, a startup company dedicated to cyber security, has told that the hack had happened in the night of 19 June.

As for the stolen assets, Ripple was among the cryptocurrencies hackers have managed to steal, the information on this matter is likely to become clarified in the following hours. Meanwhile, Bloomberg notes the serious drop of Bitcoin:

If the numbers provided in the media are correct, this hack is still lesser than that of Coincheck which has resulted in the loss of $400M at the very least. What really makes this news important is the exchange reputation and size - the South Korean Bithumb is number six digital currency platform in the world when it comes to the trade volume (data provided by Coinmarketcap). While Coinrail has recently lost approximately the same sum, a similar loss is even less acceptable for Bithumb, as witnessed by the following sharp reaction of investors captured on the stats above.
