Bithumb deletes tweet on lost funds return

19 June 2018 21:00, UTC

Bithumb, a large cryptocurrency exchange which has been hacked last night (19 June 2018), has deleted its tweet regarding the return of lost funds. The decision has never been explained by the organization.

It is very likely that the SMM department of the exchange has been sure that this statement needs to be made, while the leadership has decided to leave more room for maneuver. The only problem remaining after the deletion is that the tweet has not been online for 30 seconds - it has been shared on major outlets and screenshots exist online:

There is also a larger problem despite the fact that the $30M hack is not a big loss for this brokerage which is worth over a billion dollars. The exchange has experienced a third hack in a 12-month period, as noted by cryptocurrency observer Joseph Young:

Some media outlets (e.g. Bloomberg) have connected the local drop of Bitcoin to the exchange hack. The theory has been criticized by the cryptocurrency community due to the fact that the capitalization of this South Korean establishment exceeds the losses by ten.

As for the deleted tweet, conspiracy theories are starting to grow, as the part of the community believes that there was actually no loss at all and it was staged to evade taxes somehow.
