SegWit2x may return on Thursday

24 December 2017 21:00, UTC

SegWit2x, a hard fork, or a big update of Bitcoin, can actually see the light of day thanks to a team led by Jaap Terlouw. As the roadmap posted on their site tells, they plan to release the fork on 28.12.2017 at block 501451, and later they are going to include Smart Contracts, Lightning Network, ZkSnark and other technological advancements.

This hard fork was one of the hot topics of the past autumn, leading to big fan battles on Twitter. Even notable persons, like Bobby Lee, cryptocurrency investor, and his brother Charlie Lee, creator of Litecoin, took sides in this little civil war. Those who were for the original Bitcoin thought the whole SegWit2x and the New York Agreement of major cryptocurrency organizations was a corporate conspiracy; those who backed the SegWit2x and B2X, a possible Bitcoin variation that might have appeared due to this protocol segregation as part of the update, noted that the old BTC protocol is becoming obsolete.

Now that a team of developers (judging by the messages in the media, not connected with the initial group) wants to finish what has been started and postponed indefinitely after the controversy heat peaked, this altcoin might appear and become a rival to Bitcoin on par with Bitcoin Cash.
