Russian VK social media might use crypto payments in the future

20 November 2017 21:00, UTC

Contrary to cryptocurrency evangelists’ position, it’s not like coins are ready to replace fiat currencies tomorrow. First, they’d better appear as a payment method on popular websites. Amazon, for example, might be developing something related to this, but even if it does eventually implement Bitcoin payments, other sites will not necessarily follow this decision.

VK.com, a popular Russian social media, so popular in Russia that it often considered better than Facebook due to more interesting features and better interface, might be considering to implement cryptocurrency payments. Our website has managed to get access to the internal translation system, and there is (sadly) only one mention of “cryptocoins”:

The parameter name suggests that it’s connected to cryptocurrency payments history. However, if one looks at the translation history chart, one sees “2013” as the last year this string was redacted. Since then, the management might have postponed the plans to integrate cryptocurrency payments. Even more, there are no mentions of “bitcoin”, “btc”, “cryptocurrency” or “ethereum” aside from this string, but the finding still indicates that this social media website could theoretically do this in the future.

As for the current management position, latest news only tell that the company decided to allow ICO, blockchain and cryptocurrency-related ads on the platform once it became clear the Russian government is not going to completely prohibit the market.
