Project ARCHANGEL: UK National Archives to use blockchain

07 June 2018 21:00, UTC

The National Archives of the United Kingdom may further digitize its structure by using blockchain technologies soon, as reported by the technology media. Other members of the ARCHANGEL project include the University of Surrey, the Open Data Institute and The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) acting as a principal sponsor. The ambitious main goal of the project is to prevent any attempts to rewrite history.

The National Archives was founded in 2003 from four separate organizations, one of which was 165 years old at the time of merger. Blockchain was invented in the late 2000s and popularized by Satoshi Nakamoto and his financial project widely known as Bitcoin. The University of Surrey (founded 1966) is involved in other curious blockchain initiatives, including healthcare and finance, which can be seen on their official website.

EPSRC Chief Executive, Professor Philip Nelson, has previously claimed that blockchain could actually transform the way society works. This has been criticized by other experts who say that this innovation is nothing more than an upgraded database.
