Hahn Air Launches Blockchain-based Airline Tickets

19 November 2019 09:54, UTC
The German airline Hahn Air claims to be the first airline to issue blockchain tickets, according to a November 18 press release by the company.

Blockchain ticketing was made possible through the collaboration of Hahn Air with Winding Tree, a decentralized platform for the travel industry. The latter also established partnerships with airlines and service companies such as Air Canada, Air France-KLM, Lufthansa and Swissport. The first passengers to use the blockchain tickets were Hahn Air and Winding Tree employees themselves.

Commenting on the product, Frederick NOWOTNY, head of sales engineering at Hahn Air, noted that the company's goal is to keep track of the opportunities that technology provides for travel distribution, even if its widespread recognition remains only in the foreseeable future. In an interview with Reuters, Jörg TROESTER, Hahn Air’s head of corporate strategy and government & industry affairs, noted that ticket distribution speed is crucial and blockchain needs to be tested:
“For us, it is important to look into the future to understand how can we make distribution faster”
