Ethereum Classic difficulty bomb removed

29 May 2018 21:00, UTC

In full accordance with the plans of the community, the difficulty bomb has been dismantled in the blockchain of Ethereum Classic (ETC). The main reason for its removal was the fact that unlike Ethereum, Ethereum Classic will not move to the Proof-of-Stake algorithm in the future, which eliminates the need for this structural legacy.

As a reminder, Ethereum Classic was born due to the divergence of opinions in the community of the original Ethereum on whether or not the new update needed implementation. Some features of the original Ethereum remained in the blockchain of ETC, including the difficulty bomb.

The press notes that the update has been discussed for a long time and thus this fork was not a surprise for anyone: nodes and platforms have prepared for the protocol update in advance.

When compared to Ethereum, the price statistics of Ethereum Classic looks more stable, although it has not evaded the general sentiment of investors and fell from $18 to $15 at the press time. Meanwhile, Ethereum has lost $200 at the same time (from 20 to 30 May 2018). The difference is likely explained by the scale of the market of the two - while ETC has a stable audience and no visible scandals, ETH has recently been described in the press as economically vulnerable to ICOs. The capitalization of ETH is $57,111,563,915 USD, while that of ETC is only $1,569,993,003 USD.
