Edward SNOWDEN, a former CIA officer and one of the world's leading privacy advocates, believes that bitcoin is not confidential enough and that an upcoming software update could make matters worse.

Snowden's comments caused some resonance from other experts. Alex GLADSTEIN, the Chief Strategy Officer of the Human Rights Foundation, believes Snowden is misunderstanding the update known as Taproot. Others argue that Snowden does not see the real importance of mass adoption, which could fail if it goes too far to the side of anonymity.

Taproot, which was first proposed in early 2018, is underway. Taproot aims to improve privacy, scalability and security. With Taproot, multi-step transactions will appear as if they were peer-to-peer transactions. What's more, the Taproot update is likely to be combined with Schnorr signatures, which combine multiple signatures into one, adding even more privacy.
