Cryptocurrency enters dictionary

06 March 2018 21:00, UTC

Cryptocurrency is now officially in the Merriam-Webster dictionary among other 850 new words added in the online edition.

The importance of this event lies in the fact that once the word is added in a big dictionary, this event marks the recognition of importance of this word by people who have no connection to the related market and overall can be called neutral to the idea.

“These new words have been added to the dictionary because they have become established members of the English language”, confirms one of the editors of this dictionary.

Other fintech-related terms are blockchain and initial coin offering. Microcredit, while not being a token-related term, is also a notable addition.

Bitcoin became #2 in Google Trends last year, which is another important example of how the public is getting aware of the concept of cryptocurrency by searching the most popular one. The Russian equivalent for cryptocurrency (криптовалюта) has also become #1 in Top 10 Most Searched Things and Phenomena of Yandex, the popular Russian search engine.
