BTC dominance index dropped to an all-time low

01 January 2018 21:00, UTC

Bitcoin's dominance over the crypto market reached a low of 36.10%. This mark has become an all-time low for the first cryptocurrency. Within a few weeks this index fell almost twofold - on December 8 it reached its peak in the second half of 2017, rising to 64.82%.

Last time the share of Bitcoin capitalization in the cryptocurrency market was approaching the third of its volume was on June 20, 2017. Then the index was at the rate of 37.44%. At that moment Ethereum accounted for significant share of the market. It was almost equal to bitcoin in terms of capitalization.

The current decline in the index is caused by a sharp increase in the capitalization of Ripple, as well as the growth of other altcoins that are outside of the top list.

Capitalization of the entire cryptocurrency market at the time of writing was at the rate of $636,7 billion and it is approaching all-time high.

Bitcoin is currently climbing back after significant losses before and during the Christmas holidays.  The first cryptocurrency posted a 3% per cent rise on the day to $13,825.
