Brian Fargo’s new game shop to use its own cryptocoin
The theme of cryptocurrency in videogames slowly expands as Brian Fargo, one of the creators of the original Fallout games, decides to distribute video games through a new shop called Robot Cache. This shop will have its own cryptocurrency called IRON and it will be based on ERC20 (a token standard).
According to the description seen in the media, a gamer will be able to trade his games bought on this platform for these IRON coins and even craft them in some way. The platform is planned to launch in spring 2018, while tokens will be available much sooner - this week. The platform itself resembles Steam or EA’s Origin, if it wasn’t for this small crypto addition.
Cryptocurrency for gaming is a relatively new fintech field, and it can serve the developers well when combined with smartly-integrated microtransactions. Another notable recent example is Decentraland, a VR game in which the user can buy parts of the game world for cryptocurrency (still under development). But, as demonstrated by Star Wars: Battlefront II, microtransactions can cause a controversy even when they are in the fiat form.
