Army vote: West Virginia to test blockchain voting system for soldiers overseas

28 March 2018 21:00, UTC

West Virginia state authorities are now testing what may be the first ever public use of blockchain for military purposes, something what Bitnewstoday speculated about last year in the reports regarding blockchain-based aviation spare parts tracking system. In this case, soldiers who are stationed outside of America may soon get an opportunity to vote using blockchain.

What’s even more interesting in this story is that Voatz, a blockchain firm which has raised $2M at the beginning of this year, is directly connected to the project. This indicates that this particular startup has a consistent business strategy and does not try to manipulate anyone just by using the topic currently popular on the market.

Although an American soldier certainly can vote overseas without blockchain, the slow delivery of ballots is a real problem, note the people who are aware of the process. The project of Voatz is claimed to have the biometric verification of fingerprints by a mobile phone which greatly helps to ensure that the vote is not part of the fraud or after-hack data insertion.

The security of voting is a pressing issue in the United States due to unknown hackers (most likely government-backed) who tried to tamper with electronic voting machines in 2016.
